Science and the scientific process must inform and guide decisions of my Administration on a wide range of issues, including improvement of public health, protection of the environment, increased efficiency in the use of energy and other resources, mitigation of the threat of climate change, and protection of national security.

The public must be able to trust the science and scientific process informing public policy decisions. Political officials should not suppress or alter scientific or technological findings and conclusions. If scientific and technological information is developed and used by the Federal Government, it should ordinarily be made available to the public. To the extent permitted by law, there should be transparency in the preparation, identification, and use of scientific and technological information in policymaking. The selection of scientists and technology professionals for positions in the executive branch should be based on their scientific and technological knowledge, credentials, experience, and integrity.

Seguramente porque leo demasiada Ciencia Ficción (últimamente ando liado con una colección de cuentos de Asimov centrada en robots) la posibilidad de investigar con células madre en la mayor potencia científica y tecnológica del mundo y la expansión del término transhumanismo hacen que mi cabeza empiece a desvariar. Procuraré no desbarrar, aunque no prometo nada. Quizás sería excesivo decir que asistimos a un tiempo equivalente al del giro copernicano y baste señalar que vivimos tiempos centíficamente interesantes.

Ya no existe veto en los Estados Unidos. Las investigaciones con células madre no sólo pueden disponer de fondos federales sino que las agencias públicas de salud deben emprender y apoyar acciones dirigidas al trabajo responsable con células madre embrionarias. La Orden Ejecutiva está fechada a 9 de Marzo, y va acompañada de un Memorandum que es casi más interesante:

That is why today, I am also signing a Presidential Memorandum directing the head of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy to develop a strategy for restoring scientific integrity to government decision making. To ensure that in this new Administration, we base our public policies on the soundest science; that we appoint scientific advisors based on their credentials and experience, not their politics or ideology; and that we are open and honest with the American people about the science behind our decisions. That is how we will harness the power of science to achieve our goals – to preserve our environment and protect our national security; to create the jobs of the future, and live longer, healthier lives.

Basar las políticas científicas en resultados científicos. Tomar consejo científico basado en credenciales y experiencia y no en ideología. Hacer política científica transparente para el público. Tres medidas tan de sentido común que es revolucionario implementarlas en la Administración. Unas simples directrices que deben sustituir a otras que, deliberadamente, apuntaban en sentido contrario. Cómo pudo eso pasar en Occidente en pleno siglo XXI es un misterio que no alcanzo a comprender.
